Climate change law

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges in the history of law. It encompasses commitments, emissions trading, financing, disclosure, litigation, monitoring, taxation, the social cost of carbon, traditional regulation, transparency, verification and the emergence of environmental justice issues.

The LL.M. in International Business Law at the University of Lausanne offers a course on “The Law of Climate Change”, which is open to non-LL.M. students. Taught by Professor Lawrence Watters (https://unil.ch/llm/home/menuinst/faculty/teaching-staff/professor-lawrence-watters.html), it examines the concepts and principles of climate change law. The international framework, in agreements, conventions and governance, is explored with a focus on challenges and priorities, as well as analysis of regional approaches in Europe (the EU), and national approaches (China and the USA). Case studies are used to illustrate theory and practice, aspirations and achievements, drawing on authoritative research sources.
